Fault network compartmentalisation and controls on fluid contacts at the Valemon Field

This Master's project was assigned to Mathilde Teigland who started the Master's program in Earth sciences, UiB, fall 2025. The Master's project is given by the research group Geodynamics and basin studies.

Hovedinnhold

Project description

Understanding trapping of buouyant fluids (oil, gas and CO2) is important for exploration and extraction of oil and gas as well as for storage of CO2 in the subsurface. Trapping such fluids is determined by an interplay of charge, vertical (along-fault) leakage and lateral (across-fault) sealing.

The Valmeon field is compartmentalised, but the differences in fluid pressure and pre-production hydrocarbon-water contacts are significantly different than in the neighbouring Kvitebjørn field. It is not presently understood why these fields differ with respect to compartmentalization.

This project will investigate the fault network that compartmentalizes the Kvitebjørn field in order to better understand controls on pre-production fluid pressures and fluid contacts between compartments. The project includes analysis of compartment-delineating faults, geochemical differences, fluid pressures and their responses to production of hydrocarbons. Seismic interpretation and building of a structural model in Petrel and visualisation in GIS will be essential for the analyses.
