MA Politics and Governance of Global Challenges

The redesigned Master’s programme in Politics and Governance of Global Challenges explores the complex multi-level governance of global, and often wicked, problems in the contemporary world such as inequality, climate change, migration, or pandemics.

Hovedinnhold

Climate change, migration, health or food security are some of the pressing global governance challenges humanity faces today. Addressing these is essential for the future of our planet and for an equitable global society. As the causes and effects of global challenges transcend borders, they require effective coordination between local, national and global institutions, public and private. This is no easy task as the multi-level governance of global challenges must navigate a complex political sphere of competing interests, values, and priorities.

  • How do different actors frame policy problems and solutions in response to global challenges and how has such framing developed over time?
  • What are the global regimes for governing migration, climate change, food security and other pressing challenges and how can we explain their emergence, structure, and actions?
  • How and why do national policies and local practices to confront global challenges vary and how do these interact with the global governance of different challenges?
  • What implications do the politics and governance of global challenges foster for global equality and sustainable development?

A future-oriented program

In the MA Politics and Governance of Global Challenges, policy issues such as global inequality, climate change, migration, food security, or pandemics provide thematic hubs to discuss the complex multi-level governance of truly global, and often wicked, problems in the contemporary world. Throughout the program, you will explore the historical development of the transnational system for addressing global challenges and critically examine the interrelations among different actors in international, national and local arenas through various political science lenses.

In a project-based learning setting, you will develop the knowledge, skills and competences to understand, analyze and critically discuss global challenges from a politics and governance perspective, including working towards potential fair and sustainable solutions for addressing the complex issues facing our world today. The MA program includes a mobility semester for studying abroad, opportunities for internships, or for self-organised interdisciplinary learning at UiB.
