Mette Vesterhus er ansatt som professor ved UiB (100%) og er utdanningsleder ved K2. Som spesialist i fordøyelsessykdommer med spesiell interesse for leversykdommer, har hun en bistilling som overlege ved Haraldsplass diakonale sykehus. Forskningen hennes fokuserer på autoimmune leversykdommer, med særlig vekt på leverelastografi og biomarkører for fibrose, og for sykdomsaktivitet og prognose ved primær skleroserende cholangitt. Knyttet til forskningen, leder hun leverforskningsgruppen ved Haraldsplass, NoPSC Bergen Clinical Research Group, og er prosjektleder for ScandPSC - Strategic Prospective Scandinavian PSC Biobank & Cohort og Nasjonalt nettverk for autoimmune leversykdommer. For øvrig er hun er leder av Norsk Gastroenterologisk Forening (NGF) og medlem av NGFs Interessegruppe for leversykdommer, som bl.a. arrangerer det årlige Nasjonalt levermøte.
