The BIDS cluster comprises several researchers and their associated collaborators, that have the overall aim of contributing to coordinated guidance and interventions to improve appropriate use of and/or develop novel microbiological diagnostics (including biomarkers) to guide therapeutic decisions for several infectious diseases. Respiratory infections are especially prioritised.

The research portfolio includes studies that promote appropriate timely diagnostic testing, including optimised specimen collection, and pathogen identification in order to deliver more effective and efficient patient care.  Finally, an overarching focus is on novel interventions to reduce excessive and increase effective antibiotic prescribing that may have a positive impact on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), hospital infections, and clinical outcomes.
