Course description
Objectives and Content
This course will provide guidance in the development of a research proposal for the master's thesis. Students will apply knowledge and skills gained in FIL322 in selecting a thesis topic, finding relevant literature, and writing a project proposal.
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:
After completing the course, the student should have
- Familiarity with the basic components of a research project proposal in philosophy;
- Familiarity with central scholarly literature connected to their chosen topic.
Skills:
After completing the course, the student should be able to
- Write a review of central scholarly literature connected to their chosen thesis topic;
- Motivate and articulate the main research question(s) that their master's thesis will answer;
- Explain how they will address the(se) questions(s) in their thesis;
- Make a plan for the completion of the proposed project;
- Write a research project proposal.
Competence:
After completing the course, the student should be competent to
- Undertake research in philosophy;
- Write a master's thesis in philosophy.

Access to the Course
A condition for entry into this course is having been accepted for the Masters programme in philosophy.
Teaching and learning methods
Teaching is offered in the form of lectures and/or seminars.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
In order to complete the course, students must:
- Attend at least 70% of the seminars
- Present their project proposal (scheduled by the instructor)
- Submit a draft of their project proposal at least 2 working days before the seminar in which they are presenting
- Deliver a completed and signed supervision contract by the end of the semester
An approval of compulsory requirements is valid for three semesters, including the semester in which the approval is given.
Forms of Assessment
The final assessment for the course will be based on a project proposal for the master's thesis, which must include:
- A description of the proposed master's thesis (2000-3000 words, not including citations and bibliography). The topic of the project must be approved by the instructor.
- A progress plan for the proposed master's thesis.
Grading Scale
Pass or Fail.
