Course description

Objectives and Content

The course aims to provide an in-depth view of advanced molecular and cellular immunology, with a focus on current topics in the field of immunology. An emphasis is also on understanding new concepts in mechanisms of immune defence and immunological diseases. In addition, the course will provide a presentation of the immunological research environments and expertise at UiB.

Learning Outcomes

* Knowledge

After completing the course the student should be able to:

  • Recognize the main types of cells, tissues, signal molecules and bioactive factors (components), which the immune system is comprised of.
  • Outline the development and maturation process of immune competent cells.
  • Understand the basic mechanisms for how the immune system becomes activated and responds to stimuli e.g. infections, tissue damage or cancer.
  • Have knowledge about fundamental principles for defence and fight against infections. Present methods/treatment that can strengthen the immunity against infectious agents (e.g. vaccination).
  • Account for main groups of diseases related to a failing immune system (e.g. autoimmunity, allergy and immune deficiency) and describe in general the disease processes.
  • Outline methods for treatment of immune related diseases and symptoms.

* Skills

  • Describe how immunological methods can be used in biological and medical research.
  • Apply the immunological knowledge to own research project.

* General Competence

  • Obtain specific knowledge of how the immune system works in health and disease.
  • To be able to distinguish the immunological component in a variety of complex health issues.
  • Understand the importance of using immunological knowledge in both prevention and combating diseases.

Level of Study

Master students or students at equal/similar level with background: biology, medicine, odontology, pharmacy.

Semester of Instruction

Spring.

Place of Instruction

Lab. building / BB-building at Haukeland University Hospital.
Required Previous Knowledge
  • The student should be at graduate level (having a BSc or equivalent)
  • No knowledge immunology is needed, but advantageous
  • Basic knowledge of human biology
  • Recommended Previous Knowledge
  • Basic cell biology and human immunology knowledge is recommended.
  • Credit Reduction due to Course Overlap
    The course is overlapping with HUIMM303, HUIMM303A, HUIMM903, HUIMM 903A and MOL212.
    Teaching and learning methods
    The course encompasses lectures, seminars, project presentations from students, as well as individual studies and student presentations with discussions of immunological articles within current research fields.
    Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching
    In general, lectures from February to May, every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:15-2:00, with written oral exam in May. A detailed program is prepared prior to start of course. Please contact the course coordinator Yenan Bryceson for more information.
    Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
    The student must attend at least 80% of the lectures to take the exam.
    Forms of Assessment

    Evaluation of presentations of articles.

    Oral exam, 2 hours.
