Course description

Objectives and Content

KIN201 builds on KIN103 and KIN104, with teaching on the intermediate level in and about the Chinese language. The main emphasis is on practical reading, written output and general understanding.

A short period of overseas studies in one or two Chinese universities can be offered. Information will be given in the beginning of the teaching semester and on KIN201's course site in Mitt UiB.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the course, the student is expected to:

- have acquired a vocabulary and understanding of grammar on the intermediate level

Skills

- master a vocabulary of approx. 800 words connected to the everyday and public spheres, and close to 160 written signs

General competence

- have increased his/her understanding of texts and writing abilities

Access to the Course
The course is open to all students admitted to the University of Bergen.
Teaching and learning methods

Teaching is conducted in the form of lectures and conversation groups: 2 lectures and 2 group sessions weekly over the course of 12 weeks.

The number of teaching weeks in Bergen will be reduced for those participating in the short time study trip to China.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Attending 75 % of the teaching is mandatory. The course comprises 8 obligatory assignments, of which 6 must be approved.

Approval on mandatory assignments is valid only for the semester in which the course was conducted, as well as for the following semester.

Forms of Assessment
Four hour written examination in reading, grammar and writing skills.
Grading Scale
The exam is marked on a scale from A to F, where F means that the candidate fails.
Assessment Semester
Spring. Students with approvals on their mandatory assignments may also be assessed in the fall semester.
Reading List
Text book with a complimentary work book and media resources. Dictionaries and a separate grammar text book. The reading list will be ready by 1 Jul for the fall semester, and 1 Dec for the spring semester.

Evaluation of the course is carried out in accordance with the University of Bergen quality assurance system.
