Each year the Digital Culture Fulbright Lecturer gives a lecture at the conclusion of their time in Bergen. Chris Ingraham (University of Utah) offers us a talk on algorithmic culture based on a section of his new book.

In this talk, Chris will discuss his forthcoming book, Gestures of Concern (Duke University Press, 2020), and explore the case of a controversy that played out on Goodreads.com in 2013. In a time when algorithmic culture has democratized creative and critical participation in public life, citizen artists and citizen critics have emerged as subject formations that are sometimes at odds with each other—and with the digital platforms that both afford and constrain the sorts of participation regarded as of valuable in the first place.

Chris Ingraham is Assistant Professor of Communication at the University of Utah, and the 2018-19 Fulbright Scholar in Digital Culture at the University of Bergen, Norway. In Bergen, he taught classes in Digital Culture, and researched Karl Ove Knausgård, recommendation algorithms, LEGOs, and machine vision. Along with fellow UiB researchers Scott Rettberg, Kjersti Aarstein, and others, Ingraham recently published a roundtable discussion in the electronic book review, Our Struggle: Reading Karl Ove Knausgård’s Min Kamp.

Before becoming an academic, Ingraham worked for several years as a freelance writer and as an editor in the New York publishing industry.
