In this talk, Chris will discuss his forthcoming book, Gestures of Concern (Duke University Press, 2020), and explore the case of a controversy that played out on Goodreads.com in 2013. In a time when algorithmic culture has democratized creative and critical participation in public life, citizen artists and citizen critics have emerged as subject formations that are sometimes at odds with each other—and with the digital platforms that both afford and constrain the sorts of participation regarded as of valuable in the first place.
