The immigration issue is considered to be a "Facebook-friendly"  issue. It is viewed by active debaters as particularly well-suited for discussion on Facebook. But how is such a debate performed on this platform?

In this seminar, Ida Andersen, postdoctoral fellow at the department of Foreign Languages, UiB, will present findings from her study of Scandinavian Facebook debates about the "refugee crisis" in 2015-2016. Drawing on the concept of "principle of expression", she will show how the immigration debate on Facebook facilitates a display of opinions. Instead of providing a space for deliberative discussion, Facebook encourages personal attacks, moral positioning, and trench warfare.
