Main content

Professor Stephen Hodkinson is one of the most renowned scholars on Spartan history, with numerous publications ranging from the economic and social to the political and cultural aspects. For the last two decades he has concentrated his research and publications on the reception of ancient Sparta in the modern world. This lecture reflects his efforts to both explain and debunk the recent far-right appropriations of Sparta. The use of Sparta to legitimate the American “Alt-right” and European “Identitarians” has deep roots in western thinking, but not so much in the ancient sources.

You all are welcome to this journey down the rabbit-hole that is the myth of Sparta.
