Kirsti Malterud has provided important contributions to development, implementation and teaching of qualitative research in medical and healthcare research methodology. Her most prominent publications and contributions within in this field include these issues:

  • Basic introduction to the interpretative paradigm and the subsequent application in qualitative general practice research
  • Systematic Text Condensation: Creating and mediating a method for thematic analysis of qualitative data
  • Focus groups: The practical application of feasible and high quality focus group studies designs
  • Qualitative Metasynthesis: Presenting a strategy for sustainable systematic reviews of qualitative studies

Malterud has been applying different qualitative methods in a broad range of general practice areas, focusing experiences from patients from vulnerable populations and their doctors, understanding medical symptoms and diagnostic reasoning (especially medically unexplained symptoms), improving doctor-patient communication in the GP consultation (especially with women patients), exploring the potential of vulnerability as a resource in healthcare (different sources of marginality), addressing health promotion and reducing stigma in healthcare.

Malterud has been the supervisor (main or additional) for 26 PhD students
