Dr.philos Per Lægreid  (1949) is professor in public administration and organization theory at the University of Bergen since 1992. He is currently heading the research group on “Political organization and multi-level governance” at the Department of Administration and Organization Theory. He has served as research director and is currently a part time senior researcher at Stein Rokkan Centre. He has also been head of department and  research leader at the Norwegian Research Centre in Organization and Management. He has been involved in several big research programs on administrative reforms and public administration in general in Norway such as the first and second Norwegian Power Study. In 2007 Lægreid was elected as a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letter.

 

Lægreid has been central in international public administration research. He has been member of the board of the Scandinavian Consortium for Organizational Research (Scancor) at Stanford University. He is a visiting professor at Copenhagen Business School, has had fellowship at Karholike Universiteit in Leuven and has several times  been visiting scholar at Stanford University. He has been co-editor of Scandinavian Political Studies, and is editorial member of several leading international journals.  He is member of the governing board of the IPSA’s Research Committee on the Structure and Organization of Government (SOG). He has been co-chair of the EGPA Study Group on Performance in the Public Sector and is currently co-chair of the EGPA study group of Governance of Public Sector Organizations.

 

In his research, Lægreid has generally concerned himself with the study of public management and administration, and particularly the central administration, administrative reform, management policy and institutional change in a Norwegian, Nordic and European perspective. He has also been engaged with issues related to multi-level governance, and challenges concerning democratic governance and accountability and in particular NPM reforms in an international comparative perspective.

 

He has run and been a key participant in several international research projects and programs such as a Nordic Comparative Project on Administrative Reforms and European Integration,  The Comparative Public Organization Data Base for Research and Analysis (COBRA), COST - Comparative Research Into Current Trends in Public Sector Organizations (CRIPO), where he serves as a vice-chair. He has also been involved in arranging several international workshops and conferences and is a very active participant in such networks.

 

Lægreid has a very comprehensive scientific production and has published extensively on public sector reform from a comparative perspective. His recent books have been published at Edward, Elgar, Ashgate, Palgrave Macmillan, Routledge and Universitetsforlaget. His recent journal articles have been published in Governance, Public Administration, Public Administration Review, Public Management Review, International Journal of Public Administration, Public Organization Review.
