The aim of my research in analytical chemistry is to maximize the information that can be gained from analytical instrumentation by application of chemometrics.

The activities to achieve this goal can be divided into the following categories:

  • Extraction of information from spectra and chromatograms for the purpose of quantification and identification. This includes techniques such as noise reduction, spectral matching and deconvolution of overlapping signals
  • Prediction of chromatographic retention, and retention based methods for identification
  • Optimization and standardization of chromatographic conditions by means of response surface methodology

In addition, I also develop Matlab based software for chromatography and mass spectrometry used in our teaching and research, and maintain databases of chromatographic and mass spectrometric data of fatty acid methyl esters.

Courses

I teach the subjects KJEM/FARM-250 (Analytical Chemistry), KJEM350 (Quantitative Organic Analysis), and EMQAL AM15.

Master’s projects

Master’s projects in chemometrics or analytical chemistry are offered to students in the master’s programs in chemistry and medical technology.

Several of the master's projects are carried out in external laboratories, typically at Haukeland University Hospital or the Institute of Marine Research.
