Using a state-of-the-art CT scanner, the museum wished to find out more about who these embalmed people were: how they died, what they were hoping for in the afterlife and how they ended up in Bergen.

Among other things, the scans revealed a painting in the bottom of a coffin, and that the mummy of Teshemmin was buried with a mask. The remains of a bead necklace were also found in the coffin.

CT scanning mummies is an international trend, and it can lead to major new research findings, according to research fellow Pål Steiner, who is expert advisor for the assignment.
