For the first time ever, the academic year was officially opened at Muséplass 1, and the square in front of Bergen Museum was packed with students and employees in beautiful August sunshine.

Rector Sigmund Grønmo pointed out in his welcome speech that the choice of location was by no means a matter of chance:

‘One of the reasons we have chosen this location to welcome new students is to mark the start of the extensive restoration work on this stately museum building, which will be returned to its former glory and turned into an even more prominent showcase for the university and for the local community’.

Mayor Gunnar Bakke and Helene Christiansen, leader of the student parliament, also made speeches.

The evening continued for the new students with entertainment at the Student Centre, where the rapper Lars Vaular and the student choir Sirenene were among the performers.
