Pediatric challenges in global health
From the 18th to the 20th of January, the pediatric ward (Barne- og ungdomsklinikken) at Haukeland University Hospital hosted the “2017 Pediatric days”.

During the three-day conference, a long list of esteemed speakers gave talks on challenges, progress and research related to pediatric care. Headed by Professor Thorkild Tylleskär, CISMAC hosted an engaging session addressing pediatric care in global health.
In line with CISMAC’s ambitions to engage in and support research aiming to reduce the 6 million preventable child deaths a year in low and middle income countries, the speakers shared stories from their work. The session covered a wide range of topics including global disaster medicine, the persistent challenges of delivering healthcare in resource poor settings and the importance of doing research in these areas. Furthermore, the speakers shared examples of how these challenges can be addressed through appropriate interventions and targeted research.
Invited speakers were Associate Professor Johan von Schreeb from Karolinska Institute and Medecins sans Frontieres, Professor James K Tumwine from Makerere University, Uganda as well as CISMACs own Director, Professor Halvor Sommerfelt. Professor Thorkild Tylleskär rounded of this very inspirational session by giving engaging examples of work to reduce child morbidity and mortality from his own research on preventing mother to child transmission of HIV.
