Love Songs from the Renaissance: The Franco-Flemish School
A concert of secular vocal music in French from the 16th century, performed by a professional vocal ensemble accompanied by recorder and triple harp. A colourful program featuring some of the most representative and well-known songs from the Franco-Flemish repertoire, rarely or never performed before in Bergen.
Main content
After initiating this series of love songs from the Renaissance with a Spanish repertoire in 2024, CANTA now turns to the rich tradition of the Franco-Flemish school.
This concert features works by some of its most renowned composers—Josquin des Prez, Pierre de La Rue, Orlande de Lassus, and others—who helped shape a new polyphonic sound that defined Renaissance Europe. These composers were central to court life and musical innovation across the continent in the 15th and 16th centuries.
In addition to vocal works, the program includes instrumental interludes and variations performed on triple harp and recorder. The evening begins with a short introductory talk to guide the audience through this rich and lesser-known repertoire.
Supported by the Embassy of Belgium in Norway on the occasion of the Belgian celebration of King's Day, as well as by the City of Bergen and Vestland County Municipality.
