EXTREMOPHILES RESEARCH

Visiting PhD student from Bulgaria

Nikoleta Ivanova Boteva is visiting General Microbiology for 6 months as a part of an EEA project with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences on extremophiles research.

Main content

There is a large number of terrestrial geothermal environments in Bulgaria with temperatures ranging from 50oC to boiling, with a huge diversity of thermophilic bacteria and archaea. As part of the project 'Diversity and biotechnology of extremophilic Archaea in Bulgarian hot springs', Nikoleta Boteva will study this diversity using anaerobic cultivation techniques as well as metagenomic approaches, with the aim to identify novel enzymes from these microorganisms with industrial potential.
