Supervisors

The candidate applies to the Department to have the dissertation assessed at least 12 weeks, before the planned dissertation date. The principal supervisor prepares and submits the following documents:

The composition of the assessment committee is normally to be such that:

– both genders are represented
– the majority have no association with the University of Bergen
– one of the members, if possible, is from a relevant foreign institution
– all the members hold doctoral degrees or equivalent qualifications.
Specific reasons must be supplied if these criteria are not complied with. The appointed supervisor may not be a member of the committee. The faculty appoints one of its representatives as chair of the committee.

  • To the candidate: The principal supervisor writes the Co-author declaration for the candidate to submit along with the thesis. The declaration must show an overview of the candidate's independent contribution to joint work and articles. The statement should be in English and must be signed by the principal supervisor. In cases where the candidate submits a monograph, the principal supervisor must write and sign an additional statement showing that he/she is informed about the thesis submission. The department will send the declaration for impartiality to the committee members as soon as the committee is proposed.

All documents from supervisor and the signed impartiality declarations must be submitted to the Department before sending the thesis to the Faculty where the committee is formally appointed. The link to the thesis is sent from the Faculty by e-mail to the committee members along with an appointment letter, the co-author declaration and the form for the approved evaluation committee.

Please do not sendt the thesis to committee member as a pdf-file before the committee is officially appointed by the Faculty.

Printing the thesis

Please note the meny on the upper left-hand side in Avhandlingsportalen for starting the print process of the approved thesis. You can choose language of preference on the upper right-hand side.

Please note that The Department of Chemistry does not send printed versions of the to thesis to the evaluation committee. The thesis is sendt electronically from the Faculty to the committee members.

Print costs
The Department of Chemistry covers NOK 4000 in print costs as long as we arrange for digital PhD defences due to the Corona situation. The final costs will appear online during the ordering of the print job at Skipnes. The candidate orders the printed copies to be sent to his/her home address, not to the Department of Chemistry.

Please be aware that color pages are more expensive to print than black/white pages. If you only have a small dot of color (like one red bullet point), it will mark the page as a color page. We strongly suggest that colors are used only if strictly necessary and that hyperlinks and standardized headings in the word document are in black/white.

You will get the offer to have a test book. It will prolong the print time with 3 days and add costs. In most cases there is no time for the test book. You will have the opportunity to proof read the pdf-version of the file. Please be aware of the quality requirements and recommendations for pictures, graphics and geometrical figures (Avhandlingsportalen).

NB! The official print og the PhD thesis is not ordered before the evaluation committee has given it's statement that the thesis is approved for public defence. The total print time will be approximately 1 week from placing the order to the thesis arrive at the shipping address. If other procedure i required, please contact the departmental PhD coordinator.
