Monitoring the Filchner Overflow

To monitor the Filchner Overflow in the Weddell Sea, a mooring is maintained at site “S2” at the sill of the Filchner Depression.

The mooring consists of a bottom-mounted frame that includes an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler as well as temperature, salinity and oxygen sensors. The site was occupied sporadically since 1977 and continuously since 2009, giving rise to one of the longest time series from Antarctica.
