Cod genome reveals unusual immune system

BIO PhD student Anders Lanzén and Professor Frank Nilsen are two of a group of authors working at UiB and other institutions whose paper on the genome sequence of Atlantic cod was published recently as a letter to Nature.

Main content

The group’s analysis of the cod genome showed that there is evidence for complex thermal adaptations. More interestingly, their results also show that cod have an unusual immune architecture compared to other sequenced vertebrates. This result will affect the fundamental assumptions researchers make about the evolution of the adaptive immune system and its components in vertebrates.
