At this years one-day PhD seminar, 25 of our PhD candidates from 13 nations and 5 continents (!) assembled to get to know each other within and across the research groups, and get some helpful tips for the years ahead. The day started with information about the broad spectrum of research at our department and at UiB, while the main focus of the seminar was on better networking across research groups, to learn more about each other’s research projects, and how to best manage a PhD project.

For the latter part, two recently finished PhD candidates shared their experience during the all-important finishing period and how to get the most out of a PhD. GEO´s research coordinator informed on career possibilities after the PhD and shared his perspective on how to succeed an academic career.

After the formal part of the day, the participants were taken on a very rewarding geological tour through downtown and uptown Bergen by Øystein Jansen. At 7 pm (and still in glorious sunshine) the group was picked up by a boat that took us on a trip into the blue ………, where a nice dinner at a great place was waiting for us. We returned at midnight full of new impressions and thoughts, and after getting to know many new and interesting colleagues at GEO. A day for the books!
