The materiality of loss: Islamic manuscripts and political uncertainty in Mali
Dr. Charlotte Joy from the Department of Anthropology at Goldsmiths, University of London, will hold a seminar on Thursday 7th of November on the 'materiality of loss' here at the institute of Social Anthropology
Main content
In her presentation, Dr. Joy will take the destruction of the tombs of saints in Timbuktu in the summer of 2012 by the radical Islamist group Ansar Dine, as a starting point for a discussion of the materiality of loss.
UNESCO's condemnation of the events, followed by Ansar Dine's retort 'UNESCO is what?' presents us with a unique case study of competing global political positions, theories of humanitarianism and philosophies of the material.
The seminar is arranged by BSAS (Bergen Social Anthropology Seminar)
Refreshments and further discussions in the department lunch room after the seminar.
