Hydropower production planning

Abstract

Production planning in hydropower systems requires a range of models and decision support systems. There are many factors that influence the optimal way of managing the water available for production, and most of these are uncertain at the time decisions are made. Examples of such important uncertain parameters are inflow to the reservoirs and prices in the markets that are available for physical trading. Additionally, the physics in the production system is challenging to represent, and lead to trade-offs in mathematical models between accuracy and efficiency.

BKK Produksjon owns 38 hydro power plants and has an average yearly production of 7,5 TWh. All our power plants are situated in the western part of Norway.

This seminar will introduce some of the challenges with production planning for hydropower systems.

Kjetil Trovik Midthun is head of production planning at BKK Produksjon AS. He holds a PhD in Operations Research from NTNU and has previously worked as Research Manager at SINTEF.
