Abstract

Due to the high costs related to green hydrogen, most of the world's hydrogen today is supplied from grey hydrogen, resulting in a substantial carbon footprint. An important factor in determining the cost of green hydrogen is the price of electricity. Towards the future, it is expected that more fluctuating electricity prices can lead to new production strategies by avoiding peak electricity hours. Together with reduced capital expenditure for electrolyzer equipment, this can make green hydrogen competitive to other hydrogen production methods. Flexible hydrogen production can also bring crucial benefits concerning grid balancing in the energy sector. Our research shows that flexible hydrogen production is challenging today. However, under certain circumstances, futuristic scenarios suggest this to be an economically viable option.

Lars Strømholm and Raag August Sandal Rolfesen, two master's students at the Norwegian School of Economics, are currently majoring in the field of Business Analytics. They find the developing energy industry interesting along with its challenges and possibilities - and are excited to see how the technology can contribute to solutions. In light of this, they chose to write our master's thesis on the topic of flexible hydrogen production.
