Why is there a piece of the marbled muffin in the straw?

Experiment 21:

If we pierce a marbled muffin with a transparent straw, we can pull a core out of the center of the muffin and see how the differently colored layers of dough are distributed there. When the muffin is cut open, we see that this color distribution continues to the sides, the core taken with the straw gives us insights into the structure of the muffin’s inside.

In this way we can also gain knowledge about sediments or ice sheets by drawing cores. The samples from the cores then allow conclusions about what the soil or ice looks like, what substances they contain and the invisible subsurface structures of the wider area.
