Make your research matter: a guide to innovation in academia
This course is designed specifically for both researchers and administrative staff at UiB.
Main content
Course description
Around a third of peer-reviewed articles do not get cited even once, and it is estimated that the average academic publication is read in its entirety by just 10 people. Thus, despite years-long scientific efforts invested, and large sums of public funding spent, the impact of most academic research is limited, even within the scientific community.
At the same time, public funders are largely motivated by impact-driven research and innovation agendas, which aim to solve specific societal problems and deliver the scientific foundations for future solutions. Most funders therefore emphasize impact objectives and incorporate innovation perspectives (keywords: novelty, target group, user perspective, exploitation plan, knowledge valorization, innovation management) into their calls to achieve those impacts.
Increasing your literacy in the innovation topic will not only increase your chances to succeed with grants but also help you make your research more relevant to society. Experience with innovation methods also opens doors to careers outside academia. In this course, we will discuss what “innovation” in academia means, get inspiration from good examples, learn about ways to increase your own innovation potential, talk about innovation management in practice and about ways to collaborate with partners outside of academia - oftentimes a prerequisite for successful innovation.
