The first joint PhD conference between ResClim and the Climate Research School at the Bolin Centre in Stockholm was held 28–30 September in and around Bergen. The conference was arranged for the first time by PhD students from the two research schools, and we were happy to see that as many as 30 PhD candidates attended the conference.
The conference was a good opportunity for us to meet other PhD candidates studying climate, and to present our work in an unintimidating setting. The conference started with an icebreaker at the Geophysical Institute Sunday night. With speed-dating, pizza and beer, the informal atmosphere of the conference was already set.
Monday morning, we traveled to Osterøy where we stayed for two days. Here, we presented our work through both oral and poster presentations. We were all impressed by the high level of the presentations!
With us were guest lecturers Stephen Barker from Cardiff University and local Ellen Viste from the University of Bergen. In addition to a scientific talk, the guest lecturers also participated in a “career session” Monday night where we had an informal and good talk about the pros and cons of a career in academia. The conference was a great success; we are already looking forward to next year’s conference in Stockholm!
