Guidelines for the Use of AI in Assignments

1. Transparency and acknowledgment

• Participants must explicitly state whether and how they have used AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly, Elicit) in their assignments.
• A separate section at the end of each assignment should describe the AI tool used and its role in the work (e.g., idea generation, proofreading, structuring, summarizing literature).
• Any text directly generated by AI must be clearly marked as such and must not be submitted as original work.

2. Critical engagement and academic integrity

• AI tools should be used to support, not replace, critical thinking and independent analysis.
• AI-generated content must be fact-checked, edited, and properly integrated with original contributions.
• Participants are responsible for ensuring that AI-generated references or sources are valid and accurately cited.

3. Ethical considerations

• Assignments should reflect the participant's own learning process and personal engagement with the subject matter.
• AI should not be used in ways that misrepresent knowledge, such as by generating reflections or analyses without personal input.
• Participants should be aware of errors and inaccuracies in AI-generated content.

4. Feedback and use of artificial intelligence

• AI-generated text should not be used to produce entire answers or reflections, as this limits meaningful engagement with feedback from instructors.
• Participants should reflect on their learning process and explain how AI was used to support their development.
• If AI has been used for writing assistance, participants should demonstrate how they have revised and refined the result to represent their own voice and understanding.

5. Recommended practices

• Use AI as an idea generation tool to increase creativity and explore new perspectives.
• Use AI to structure thoughts, improve clarity, and identify gaps in reasoning.
• Validate all AI-generated content by cross-referencing with credible academic sources.

6. Compliance with UiB's academic guidelines

• The use of artificial intelligence must be in line with the University of Bergen's guidelines for academic integrity and plagiarism.
• Misuse of AI, including the submission of AI-generated work without acknowledgment, will be treated as a breach of academic conduct.
