The Museum Project 2014
The University of Bergen wishes to offer consolidating and contemporary science communication in a renovated, splendid building at Muséplass 3. The Directorate for Cultural Heritage praises the restoration plans.
The Directorate for Cultural Heritage in Norway refers to the Natural History Collections as a one of a kind as regards its cultural historical and antiquarian value. The building will house a state-of-the-art showcase centre for the cultural heritage and scientific collections, for science communication and research from other parts of the university, as well as premises suitable for meetings, conferences and large festivities.
The ambition is to turn this building of so much splendour into a meeting place for research communication and dialogue between the university and the city of Bergen, as was initially intended in 1865.
The Museum’s founder, Wilhelm Frimann Koren Christie (1778-1849), was a leading, political figure and central in the building of a national identity after 1814. The planned re-opening of the University Museum will be a grand celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution in 2014.
