What does it cost to conduct animal experiments at UiB?
Animal research involves costs related to housing, feed, technical support, and use of facilities. On this page, you will find information on how prices are calculated, what is included in the services, and how invoicing is handled. The full price list can be found at the bottom of the page.

How are the prices calculated?
In mapping costs and setting prices, we have based our work on the TDI model.
The TDI model (Total Direct and Indirect costs) is used as a basis when applying for project funding from the Research Council of Norway (NFR) and was developed by the university and higher education sector (UoH).
How to calculate your cost of a project?
Your total project cost depends on several factors, such as:
- Number of animals and housing requirements
- Project duration and whether it involves breeding
- Need for additional assistance from animal technicians beyond standard care
- Use of MRI or other specialized equipment
- Whether animals will be infected with pathogens
- Extent of operating room usage
The price list shows costs calculated according to the TDI model. This model ensures a comprehensive calculation of both direct and indirect costs, in line with standards in the university and higher education sector.
Projects carried out under UiB only pay a contribution towards the total cost – see the separate price list.
