CAREiN - a Course in Animal Research in Norway

CAREiN covers the theoretical requirements for training for functions to the use of rodents, pigs, and model fish in research. This course is a collaboration between the universities in Oslo, Trondheim, Tromsø and Bergen. On these pages you can read more about the course and how to apply for admission. The sad part? CAREiN is online, so you will not have to travel to Bergen.

How do I get admission to CAREiN? 

There are two ways to apply for admission to the theoretical part of CAREiN. Please choose the option that fits your backrground: 

  • I am a master's or PhD student from an educational institution in Norway 
  • I have completed my education or work for a private company
    • Then you must apply for admission as part of your continuing and further education.

Appication deadline

  • For CAREiN in the autumn: 1 August
  • For CAREiN in the spring: 1 December
  • The dealines are absolute 
  • You can expect an anwer couple weeks after the dealine

About CAREiN

  • The main goal of the course is to ensure the ethical and humane use of animals in research, and the design of animal studies that ensure the collection of informative, objective, and reproducible data from conducted animal experiments.
  • The course covers the species groups of rodents, pigs, and model fish (e.g., zebrafish, medaka) when used as model organisms in biomedical research. Adequate training is required by Norwegian law for personnel who plan and/or conduct animal experiments in Norway.
  • The course meets the theoretical training requirements for functions A, B, and D according to the EU Commission's framework for education and training.
  • The course is offered each semester.
  • The teaching is web-based, online, but with mandatory instruction. You must allocate time to participate in mandatory digital instruction that takes place at specific times.
  • The course is in English

    Admission requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, as well as being a student in a relevant master’s or doctoral program.

    Or for external applicants:

    • Relevant bachelor’s degree and documented need from the employer/supervisor. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree from abroad/outside Norway must upload transcripts with all attachments.

    Avoid rejection, remember documentation

    • You must attach documentation that shows you meet the admission requirements when you apply.
    • Examples of this can include a copy of the admission letter to a master’s or doctoral program, a statement from a supervisor, employer, or similar
    • Applications without documentation will be rejected.

    This course is theoretical, remember that you also need practical training

    Please note that to perform procedures on animals (functions A and D), one must also complete practical training accordingly. Modules covering practical training is not part of the theoretical CAREIN at UiB but is offered as separate courses by the different universities.
