About the seminar

This seminar is celebrating Smedal’s rich and varied contribution to social anthropology. His authorship covers forty years of continuous writing and ranges from his magister degree in 1988 on the Orang Lom of Bangka Island, published as Order and Difference in 1989, to his many articles on kinship, aesthetics, and house organization among the Ngadha of Flores, through such favorites among teachers and students as his contributions to Mellom himmel og jord (2000) and Blod - tykkere enn vann? (2001), abundant entries in encyclopedias, and his important engagement in general debates on such varied topics as power, ritual, sacrifice, the gift, and hierarchy.
