Main content

Death is a mystery. No living person has experienced death, and when we are dead, we are no longer there to talk about it. We do not know when we will die or what will happen afterwards. The only thing we are sure about is that we will die. What happens when our brain switches off? Are we gone forever, or do we continue to exist?

Most religions assume that life continues after death, and many choose to believe in such an after-life. However, as an increasing number of us are non-religious, this affects our attitude to death. In this book, the authors look at the transition from religious to secular death. What is death without a god and after-life? The main goal of the book is reflect on secular death. It invites us to think philosophically, and uses history, sociology and medicine to provide different perspectives on the topic.

The book has five chapters:

  • Chapter 1: Death rituals
  • Chapter 2: The paradoxes of death
  • Chapter 3: Help to live or help to die?
  • Chapter 4: Eternal life
  • Chapter 5: After-life
