In this workshop, you will be introduced to the use of photography as a unique source in academic writing, research, and dissemination. Practical tips are provided alongside a fundamental overview of issues and questions related to copyright, source criticism, and AI.

The rich digital archive of the Picture Collection at the University Library serves as the starting point for the workshop, with emphasis on experiences and examples connected to current topics such as Palestine and Sudan.

Course content:

  • Guided tour of the Picture Collection’s storage at the Humanities Library: a look at the analog treasures – the very foundation

  • Presentation and introduction to how the archive can be used online

  • Source criticism and AI: challenges of using photography as a source

  • Sensitive and ethical questions

  • Copyright and practical tips for working with images

  • Small tasks on your own computer: how to navigate sources, assess licensing, copyright, and quality
