Getting started with NVivo

The Digital Lab invites you to an introductory course in the qualitative analysis software NVivo, designed for participants with limited experience who wish to use NVivo in their own research projects, with a main focus on text data.

What is NVivo?

NVivo is a powerful tool for qualitative analysis that supports the organization, exploration, and interpretation of unstructured research data. Interviews, observational notes, open-ended survey responses, articles, and other text documents are excellent starting points. The software also supports analysis of audio, images, and video. The latest version, NVivo 15, is available under UiB’s license.

About the Course

The course will cover:

  • Starting a new project and importing files

  • Navigating the NVivo interface

  • Cases and case classifications

  • Coding and working with text material

  • Logging through memos and annotations

  • Insights into the Explore menu (search functions/word clouds)

  • Introduction to Queries

Practical Information

  • Duration: approx. 3 hours including a break

  • Participants: max. 20

  • Target group: Master’s students, PhD candidates, and researchers at UiB familiar with qualitative research methods

Preparation

Example data: will be distributed in advance for hands-on practice during the course

Installation: please install NVivo on your computer before the course (see UiB’s installation guide) and bring your own laptop
