Main content

Although the main focus of the Athens seminar will be on Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, we will also consider the pre-Socratics, ancient tragedians, sophists and political orators. These thinkers will form a framework for achieving a deeper understanding of the origins and development of philosophical thought.

The Philosophy Department at the University of Bergen is responsible for the seminar and it will take place at The Norwegian Institute at Athens. Teaching includes lectures, seminars, presentations, supervision, and excursions in Athens to places central to philosophy like Pnyx, Agora, the Theatre of Dionysus, and Kerameikos.

All UiB students are welcome to attend an informational meeting in January-Februar (details to come). In order to register your interest for the course, contact Ståle Melve (see contact info below).

Questions can be directed to the administrative contact person Ståle Melve

IMPORTANT! Currently teaching for the course (lectures, seminars, presentations, excursions) is planned to be held in Norwegian.

Therefore, if you are an exchange student or international master's student and could be interested in applying for the Athens seminar if the teaching language is changed to English, please send an e-mail to Ståle.

Students who cannot participate in the Athens seminar but would still like to take FIL233 or FIL333 will be offered alternative teaching arrangements.

Application

Since the seminar in Athens only has a limited number of places, those interested in attending need to apply.

Send in your application by February 1 to:

Philosophy Department, UiB
Postbox 7800
5020-Bergen

or by e-mail to: Stale.Melve@uib.no

Since we do not have an application form for the seminar, it is important that your application includes the following information:

  • A list of the other courses you are taking spring 2022
  • your address
  • your telephone number
  • your student number (six digits)
  • your UiB e-mail adress
  • Previous courses you have taken, especially in philosophy, ancient history, greek, or similar

Applications will be processed as quickly as possilbe. If your application is granted, we consider this a binding registration for the seminar. All seminar participants will be invited to an informational meeting where practical details for the course will be presented and questions answered.

Due to the limited number of places, students who have not previously participated in the seminar will be prioritized. Additionally master's students will be prioritized over bachelor's students. Note that if too few students apply, the department reserves the right to cancel the seminar. The department will ensure that student's who attend the seminar will be able to complete the other courses they are registered for this spring.

Course content and practical information

Information regarding the course's structure will be presented at a meeing in January-February. In connection with this meeting, each participant will receive preliminary supervision regarding their topic for the course essay. We will also go through more practical aspects of course implementation. Students who cannot attend this meeting will be contacted individually.

International student card

It is a good idea to purchase an international student card. This is an internationally recognized card that in addition to giving rebates on plane tickets, also gives rebates for museums, transportation, restaurants, etc. the world over. In order to purchase a card, you will need documentation showing that you are a full-time student and a passport sized picture.

Travel

The department will arrange travel by plane from Bergen for seminar participants. Participants are responsible for paying our travel agent for their own ticket.
