Here you will find information about application for holiday, holiday pay, transferal of vacation days and application for taking holiday in advance.

Application for holiday

All employees must apply for holiday in the self-service portal. You apply for holiday by using requests for absence. Guidance to submitting a request for absence is available her

Paid holiday
If you have earned the right to holiday pay, you have the right to take paid holiday. When applying for holiday in the self-service portal, you must use the leave type 'Paid holiday'.

Unpaid holiday
If you have not earned the right to holiday pay, or if you have not earned enough holiday pay to take all vacation days as paid holiday, you may take unpaid holiday. Normally this is applicable to employees who started their employment with UiB either this year or during the previous year. When applying for holiday in the self-service portal, you must use the leave type 'Unpaid holiday'.

Holiday pay

Holiday pay constitute 12 % of the holiday pay basis. For employees who are over 60 years, the holiday pay constitute 14.3 % of the holiday pay basis. The part of the employee’s income that exceeds six times the National Insurance basic amount (G) is not taken into account in the calculation of the extra 2.3%. Holiday pay is calculated on the basis of the salary paid to the employer in the previous year. Generally, holiday pay is part of the salary paid in June. This means that both holiday pay and normal salary is paid in June. You will also be subject to a holiday deduction if you have earned holiday pay from the previous year. The holiday deduction enables you to have paid holidays throughout the year. You may read more about the rules and regulations concering holiday pay in the Employee handbook.

Application for transferal of vacation days  

In general all paid holiday should be taken. However, at the end of the holiday year, it is possible to apply for a transferal of vacation days. The applixation must be sent in the self-service portal. Guidance on how to transfer vacation days is available here

If your application to transfer vacation days is approved, you will still see the vacation days listed in the year they were transferred from in the self-service portal. You may nevertheless use the transferred vacation days the following year.

Application for taking holiday in advance 

If you have already taken all of your holiday, if you have not earned enough holiday pay to take all vacation days as paid holiday, you may apply for taking holiday in advance. The maximum vacation days you may apply to take in advance is 10 days. However, no more advance holiday can be taken than the holiday pay you have earned.

The application must be in written form by using this form. The form must be filled out and signed by you and your leader. If the application is approved, your quota for paid holiday will be updated in the self-service portal. When the quota is updated, you must send a request of absence using the leave type 'Paid holiday'.

Sick leave whilst on holiday

If you get a 100 % sick leave from a doctor during your holiday, you are entitled to have the holiday postponed for the period of the sick leave.
