Logging and Labelling

07.07.2008 A very important aspect of any drilling operation is the description and measurement of the rock as it comes out of the ground.

Firstly, this allows us to check that we are drilling the rocks we thought we would find beneath the surface. Secondly, we can then pack the giant jigsaw puzzle of hundreds of meters of rock into boxes for transport to our labs where the logging and labeling allows us to fit the rocks all back together again.

The photo below shows scientists inspecting newly logged core from hole 1. As part of the long-term on-going collaboration between UCT and UiB, each piece of rock core sample was cut in half to be shared between the respective universities and for further collaborative studies with other international universities.
