The Centre for Geobiology (CGB) aims to develop new fundamental knowledge about the interaction between the geosphere and biosphere and the roots of life. We use our diverse competencies to educate a new generation of interdisciplinary geobiologists, who will tackle fundamental questions related to the complex interactions between Earth's geo- and biospheres and develop novel approaches for study.
CGB is one of 21 Norwegian Centres of Excellence (CoE) and is hosted by the University of Bergen.
Research Themes
Research at CGB is organised around six themes:
- Geodynamics of the Deep Seafloor
- Water-Rock-Microbe Interactions & the Deep Biosphere
- Life in Extreme Environments & Roots of Life
- Vent and Seep Biota
- Early Earth and Biosignatures
- Earth System Evolution
The reality of research activity at CGB generally spans more than one of these research themes as crossovers are inherent in the nature of interdisciplinary science.
The CGB is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Bergen and is a collaboration between the Departments of Biology and Earth Science.
