Day 13 – 7 July

The day started at midnight with the microbiologists and Christoffer Schander working on preserving and studying organisms from the recovered wood the ROV had brought up from 2900m.

Main content

Position: heading towards Tromsø
Wind speed:  16m/s (nearly gale)
Wave height: 3.8m
Visibility: very good
Weather: overcast

At the same time, Stig Monsen set out a last gravity corer that brought up a sample that contained layers with more evidence of volcanic activity.

Then the ship turned towards mainland and we set out for Tromsø against near gale conditions. We have one final task for this leg of this summer’s cruise – to attempt to recover a CTD from the sea-floor that was lost some months ago.
