Helicopter Assisted Fieldwork

02.07.2008 Today and tomorrow we will be using a helicopter to reach inaccessible field sites in the Barberton Mountain land.

Main content

This enables us to reach rock outcrops on a number of remote mountain tops. Several parts our field area remote from any vehicle trails and the helicopter allows us to spend maximum time on the rocks.

These remote sites have been selected to complete our investigations of volcanic rocks deep beneath the ancient seafloor. We hope to measure and collected rocks from parts of the Archean sub-seafloor that we haven't yet investigated.

Special sites with rocks that may contain minerals suitable for radiometric dating will also be targeted. Radiometric dating involved using the natural radioactive clocks found in some rock types to calculate the absolute age of the rocks, so we can work out how long ago they were formed.
