Guestlecture Centre for Geobiology - Dr. Richard Wirth
Main content
Seminar title:
FIB and FIB/TEM applications in Geosciences, Palaeontology and Life Sciences and Materials Science
Dr. Richard Wirth from GFZ Germen Research Centre for Geosciences, Helmholtz Centre Potsdam will visit CGB from Wednesday afternoon & Thursday 6.5.-7.5.. He is on of the top specialist (over 300 publications and conference papers) in focused ion beam sample preparation and TEM. With his sample preparation one can
prepare foils for e.g. TEM in any orientation in a sample. Additional this technique provides quasi 3D information on your sample.Normally he is very open to research collaborations and measurements at GFZ are possible.
Seminar outline:
"In my presentation with the title "FIB and FIB/TEM applications in
Geosciences, Palaeontology and Life Sciences and Materials Science" I
would like to focus on the application of FIB. After an introduction
into FIB techniques such as in-situ and ex-situ lift out, slice and view
3D imaging, I will demonstrate the capability of FIB based on the
following examples:
*Micro- and nanoinclusions in minerals.*
*Nano-diamond in Hawaiian Lava*
*Ilmenite with monoclinic perovskite structure in olivine from
kimberlite (Udachnaya, Siberia)*
*Applications in Palaeontology and Life Science.*
*Monorhaphis Chuni*
*Precambrian acritarchs.*
*Hydroxyapatite (Hap) coatings applied to the stem of hip endoprostheses
(biomaterials).*
*DAC experiments.*
*Machining diamonds (*A. Anderson, Canada)
*Recovering samples and TEM investigation*
*Sample preparation.*
*Synchrotron IR, (*applied first by M. Koch-Müller GFZ)* *
*Synchrotron XRF, (*applied at SLS, Switzerland by D. Fliegel, Univ.
Bergen, Norway)
*NanoSIMS (*proposed first by L. Dobrzhinetskaya and applied at Lawrence
Livermore Natl. Lab.*)*
*Applications in Materials Sciences.*
*Aircraft engines*
*Nano-spheres"*
