Reimagining internationalisation of higher education – Insights from South Africa

The COVID-19 pandemic has been described as a watershed moment for higher education internationalisation. While it has severely disrupted internationalisation activities of universities around the globe, the pandemic can also be seen as an accelerator of innovation, inviting us to rethink internationalisation concepts, models and practices.

In this presentation, Dr Samia Chasi will share insights from South Africa on how we can reimagine internationalisation in higher education. She will particularly draw on deliberations at the 24th IEASA Conference (https://ieasa-conference.studysa.org), held from 24 to 26 August 2022.

How can we advance internationalisation more equitably, inclusively and responsibly? What does fair research cooperation look like? What are the implications for partnerships between South African and Norwegian universities? Join us for a discussion to further explore these questions.

Dr Samia Chasi is the Manager Strategic Initiatives, Partnership Development and Research at the International Education Association of South Africa (IEASA) and a Research Fellow at the University of the Free State (UFS), South Africa.

Dr Chasi is a practitioner-scholar in higher education internationalisation with more than 20 years of experience in this field. Her research interests lie in global South perspectives on internationalisation of higher education, with a particular focus on South-North collaboration and partnerships.

The session will be chaired by Andrea Kronstad Felde, PhD Candidate at the Department of Government, Faculty of Social Sciences.
