Coupling of cycles

The cycles of carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus (and further constituents such as iron) are closely linked both in the ocean and on land.

A future challenge is, to understand and simulate the couplings between these cycles. For example, the effect of nitrogen limitation for plant growth on land is not fully understood and the relevant climatic feedback to climate an open question as yet. More process related knowledge has to be developed and transferred into mathematical formulations in models. Cooperation with the Department of Biology is and will be extremely useful for furthering this activity.
