Research possibilities and resources
The supervisor
Eivind Valen is a professor of computational biology unit (CBU) at the department of informatics. He is also an associate group leader at the Sars Centre and an associate investigator of Nordic Centre for Molecular Medicine (NCMM). His background is from bioinformatics, and he has worked on gene regulation for over 15 years. His current research interest revolves around RNA biology and understanding how regulatory elements on messenger RNAs specifies their protein output.
The research group
The Valen lab is dedicated to the study of gene regulation and RNA biology. We use a combination of experimental and computational approaches to analyze and model regulation trying to understand the interplay of transcription and translation. We have recently developed several methods for studying RNAs and their protein output, including ribosome complex profiling (RCP-seq) for monitoring translation initiation and nanopore-sequencing based methods for characterizing poly-A tails. Combining these novel approaches enable us to monitor and model regulation of RNA and translation in novel ways. In this project we aim to make use of these methods to study RNA biology under the influence of environmental stress.
Research possibilities for the fellow - topical frame
The postdoctoral fellow position is connected to the thematic area of marine sustainability. Specifically, investigating how environmental stressors affect gene regulation. The oceans are undergoing fast changes in physics, biogeochemistry, and ecosystems under human-induced climate forcing. Warming, ocean acidification, and de-oxygenation provide substantial marine environmental hazards. All these can lead to mis-regulation or adaptation in gene regulatory networks.
