Academic Morning Coffee with Roxana Baltaru

What are inclusionary commitments for? Roxana Baltaru asks, when she is visiting Academic Morning Coffee.

Main content

Roxana Baltaru, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, visits Academic Morning Coffee to talk about her new book “Inclusion Organisation in Universities – How Commitments Work”, that examines the perceived gap between the “talk” and the “walk” in universities’ commitments to inclusion, equality and diversity.

Inclusionary commitments within the walls of a historically exclusive institution reflect a cultural environment where individual empowerment and organizational proactiveness are valued. One overlooked way in which commitments work, Baltaru argues, is to help universities adapt to these expectations. This raises a crucial question: to what extent does this adaptive ‘function’ of commitments benefiting institutions interact with, or potentially undermine, the intended benefits for individuals, particularly those from historically underrepresented groups in higher education?

Roxana Baltaru´s work focuses on cultural trends and organisational change, with an emphasis on contemporary developments in higher education.

The conversation will be in English.
