Ujjwal Shekhar is a new Ph.D. student at the Department of Mathematics and his project is part of the Center for Modelling of Coupled Subsurface Dynamics. We met him to find out more about his background and project.

Thanks! I am glad that I am join this team.

Since most of us don’t know you well, can you tell us a bit about your background?

I am from India, and I came to Norway two years ago for master studies at NTNU Trondheim. My background is interdisciplinary and encompasses Geosciences and Mathematics. I have specialized in Petroleum geophysics. I was mainly working on the seismic characterization of naturally fractured reservoirs. The  goal of my master’s thesis was to find out the possible fracture sets and their orientations in transversely isotropic rock using seismic attributes. Apart from the hydrocarbon exploration,  these studies could be equally applied in the fields of earthquake seismology, geo-engineering etc. I worked as an exploration geologist before starting my studies at NTNU.

Why did you choose to pursue a PhD?

The geophysics courses that I took were quite engaging. I have spent significant amount of time understanding the propagation of seismic waves through fractures and faults. So, I wish to further develop my academic career. This PhD project seems to be well connected to certain aspects of my present work, and therefore a good chance to keep on with my research interests.

Your PhD project is part of the CSD, can you tell us a little bit about your project?

The overall goal is to develop methodology for seismic monitoring of coupled processes in the subsurface. I will try to develop full-waveform inversion methods for improved localization and characterization of induced-seismicity events. This project will also employ rock physics models to thoroughly understand the effects of fluid extraction/injection. I will be supervised by Morten Jakobsen and Inga Berre. I also look forward to collaborating with other team members. I wish to utilize their expertise and input their suggestions in this PhD project. I hope that this work will give some useful results.
