Changing Research Practices – Alternatives to Animal Testing at the Animal Facility

As part of the 3R initiatives at the Animal Facility, University of Bergen, and with financial support from the Norwegian Animal Protection Alliance, we established in 2009 a training program that does not require the use of live animals.

Main content

We offer a range of models that can replace live animals in training and educational procedures.

  • KOKEN Rat: Used to practice intubation and blood sampling from the tail. The tail is filled with simulated “blood” and provides a highly realistic experience. The same applies to intubation training.

  • Pro-Set Rat Model: Displays rat anatomy and is well-suited for dissection practice.

  • Squeekums Rat: Helps users overcome fear of rats and teaches handling techniques and ear tagging.

  • Minor Skin Procedures Model: Designed for practicing basic surgical techniques.

  • MD-PVC-MODEL (film): Demonstrates approximately 25 different surgical procedures, including transplantation of blood vessels and organs, injections, and anatomical structures. The film allows users to train without sacrificing animals.

We also offer a selection of DVDs for loan, including:

  • Endotracheal Intubation
  • Laboratory Animal Anaesthesia
  • Surgery and Perioperative Care
  • Laboratory Animal Anaesthesia: Rat & Mouse
  • Experimental Design
  • Humane Endpoints

Additionally, brochures on alternative methods to animal testing are available.

We especially recommend this training program to new technicians, PhD candidates, and students with limited experience working with animals.
