Trail lecture and public defence: Synnøve Marie Vik
On February 17 2021 Synnøve Marie Vik will defend her doctoral thesis for the PhD Degree at the University of Bergen.
Main content
Title of the thesis
“Nature as violent and violated : Five essays on the visual culture of the Anthropocene”
Trail lecture
February 15, 16:00 Digital meeting room for trail lecture
Topic: Why should Visual Studies pay attention to the debates around the concept of the Anthropocene?
The committee's reason for choice of topic:
Leslie Sklair argues in a recent collection that, “though it is still controversial, the idea of the Anthropocene helps to concentrate minds and behaviour in confronting ongoing ecological (and Coronavirus) crises.” Precisely how it does so remains open to question, though, as both the term’s meaning and its rhetorical uses have been challenged and contested, for a number of reasons and from the vantage point of a range of disciplines. Given the uncertainty surrounding the Anthropocene, its full impact and lasting effect on Visual Studies remains open. Why should Visual Studies pay attention to the debates around the concept of the Anthropocene?
